Michele Capalbo: Biography

Excelling as an interpreter of Verdian and Verismo roles, world-class soprano Michele Capalbo wields a beautiful timbre and Italianate style with thrilling vocal dexterity and finesse.

Ms. Capalbo's operatic debuts in the 2004-2005 season included Amelia (UN BALLO IN MASCHERA), which Opera Canada wrote "invited comparisons to celebrated divas from years past," and Cio-Cio-San (MADAMA BUTTERFLY) described by the Houston Press as "a radiant Butterfly...easily floating those stratospheric pianissimos once patented by Montserrat Caballe."

Gaining in international prominence, Capalbo triumphed as Leonora (LA FORZA DEL DESTINO) in her Italian debut at the Festival delle Terre Verdiane in 2004 after which she was invited to sing in the Franco Zeffirelli production of Aïda at the Teatro Sociale in Mantova. Gazzetta di Mantova described her performance as having "moments of authentic perfection and a rich palette of expressions underlined by intense sensibility."

Recognized by Opera News as "a world-class Aïda, passionate, subtle and vocally satisfying," Michele Capalbo burst onto the European stage as a last minute replacement for Le Festival de Musique de Strasbourg. Subsequent successes in the title role of AIDA followed at Palacio de Bellas Artes, Mexico, and le Théâtre du Capitole de Toulouse, France, where she performed "a beautiful, pure and noble Aïda." Debuting in the role of Tosca with New York City Opera, Capalbo's diva was described as "young, beautiful, and lithe, possessing every attribute that would make her the obsession of Rome." The New York Sun wrote that her performance revealed a "rich and polished lyric voice full of color and fluidity.

Recent concert performances included an "idiomatically apropos and thrilling" Ginevra in Giordano's LA CENA DELLE BEFFE at Lincoln Center, Poulenc's STABAT MATER with Maggio Musicale under the direction of Marcello Viotti, and the Verdi REQUIEM with Connecticut Grand Opera.

Other significant operatic roles include Desdemona (OTELLO), Leonora (IL TROVATORE), Violetta (LA TRAVIATA), Hélène (LES VÊPRES SICILIENNES), Manon Lescaut and Mimi (LA BOHÈME). No stranger to contemporary music, Ms. Capalbo has also sung Britten's Female Chorus (THE RAPE OF LUCRETIA), and Governess (THE TURN OF THE SCREW) as well as de Falla's Salud in LA VIDA BREVE.
